The Pacific coast of Costa Rica has approximately 41,300 ha. mangrove systems of which 16,000 ha. belong to the Térraba-Sierpe system which is under fluvial influence of Grande Térraba River and the Sierpe River mouths draining basins of 4767 km2 and 1966 km2 respectively.
The mangroves in this area are among the highest and most densely per hectare of Central American Pacific.
